PARTY AT THE PUB CONNECTS WITH HUNDREDS
Alpington and Yelverton residents and guests celebrated the Queen’s 90th Birthday on Saturday 4 June throughout the afternoon and into the evening. Held at the Wheel of Fortune pub and newly renovated gardens packed with people of all ages, who joined in with the activities or just relaxed and laughed with friends and family.
An organising team of a dozen residents and parish councillors had spent about a couple of months meeting regularly and sourcing funds to ensure that a comprehensive and enjoyable programme was organised. They worked alongside hosts and new landlords Tom Burke and Jan Finch who provided facilities and considerable help and advice. The “mantra” was lots of fun with no costs for guests, where possible.
The “Party at the Pub” opened at 2.00pm under a vivid blue cloudless sky with bright sunshine. Folk could stop and admire “Little Nell” an Austin Seven Chummy vintage car, actually 90 years old, owned by local enthusiast David Rix. Moving into the gardens, free activities on offer included face painting, crown making, magician, balloon making, candy floss, games and burgers/hot dogs (for children).
Local organisations including Friends of St Mary’s, Cascade, St Mary’s church and The Filling Station also took an active part.
As the afternoon sessions wound down, live music from “More than One” continued the enjoyment, along with a guest ales bar.
Later, a draw of event flyers provided three lucky entrants with a first prize of a themed luxury hamper, and various drinks.
The organisers and publicans are very grateful for sponsorship from South Norfolk Council, FW Properties, John Youngs Ltd, Totally Dynamic and Alpington with Yelverton Parish Council, plus magnificent support from a host of local businesses.
A Facebook posting sums up the event, “What a fantastic day, lovely to see so many people enjoying the sunshine in the garden. Huge thanks to everyone involved in organising this and making it such a special day.”
